Roofing Takes Off

Flat roof being built at Cornwall Airport Newquay

In the middle of June the eyes of the world will be on Cornwall as the G7 summit comes to Carbis Bay. As the leaders of some of the key nations across the globe fly in to and out of Newquay for the meeting, their eyes might just touch on a new airport building roofed by Pellow.

Undoubtedly the G7 summit may cause some disruption across parts of Cornwall as delegations meet to discuss issues such as global responses to Covid and climate change. But it also gives us a chance to showcase Cornwall; not just its landscape and history, but also, as the G7 website highlights, the part Cornwall plays “at the cutting edge of driving the UK’s new green revolution with the country’s first geothermal power plant and lithium extraction site.”

In keeping with the sustainability message the new building at Cornwall Airport Newquay was constructed by a fellow Cornish company; Building with Frames. Based at Mount Wellington Mine near Truro, Building with Frames offers an offsite construction solution for a complete range of buildings from garden rooms to multi-story offices. The company uses “a wide range of sustainable materials and insulation to reduce the carbon output during the manufacture and the building life.”*

The design for the new building at the airport called for Danosa HSF and 200mm insulation over a single ply covering. Designed for flat roofs, Danosa HSF can also be used for waterproofing a range of other areas including basements and tunnels. The product not only provides a strong and stable waterproofing cover, it also has good UV resistance; something which is particularly important when Cornwall’s sun comes out. Other advantages of Danosa HSF include excellent resistance to tearing, high puncture resistance and very good resistance to micro-organisms.

As you can see from the photos below, the weather tested us fully when we were installing this roof. We may have had blue skies at the start, but the rain came in by the end, enabling us to demonstrate straight away the waterproofing properties of Danosa HSF.
