Waterproofing Indoors

Waterproofing a roof indoors

When we mention waterproofing indoors what springs to mind? Perhaps you might envision the creation of a waterproofing surround or lining for a swimming pool? Or maybe tanking a basement to prevent underground seepage? You might even think of the laying down of a waterproof non-slip floor in a hospital or food production site?We could easily be talking about any one of those scenarios but in this case the indoors was in a hanger at Cornwall Airport, Newquay. And what we were waterproofing were the roofs of pre-fabricated wooden pods.

Designed and created by Truro based company, Building With Frames*, the pods were constructed in a hanger at the airport before being shipped to their customer. Building With Frames are able to offer a panelled system of roof, wall, and floor cassettes which can be constructed on site. But they can also deliver a completed module which merely needs to be lowered into place on site with facilities ready to connect up. That was the case with this project.

We were called in to supply and fit a waterproof roof for each of the structures. The covering of choice for this project came from waterproofing specialists, Danosa. Their single ply membranes may be best known for waterproofing flat roofs. However, depending on the chosen system, they can also be used on tunnels, dams, reservoirs and for waterproofing buried structures.

Danosa membranes have high dimensional stability as well as having good UV and fire ratings. They are also resistant to micro-organisms and root penetration, helping to prolong the life of the structure. And with high tensile strength and high puncture resistance Danosa membranes can be an ideal solution for waterproofing flat roofs in the UK climate.

Creating a waterproof roof whilst inside another structure was a different experience, but at least it meant we could get on with the project no matter what the weather was doing outside. And when we were finished the buildings could go on to their end user, ready to face the UK weather with a safe and secure waterproof covering.
