Rewarding Design

Unique building amongst trees and greenery with waterproofed flat roof

One of the joys of working in Cornwall is the sheer variety of building styles and projects which we are invited to contribute to. Over the years we’ve worked on iconic sites such as a flat roof replacement for Truro Cathedral’s Chapter House and waterproofing and insulating buildings at King Edward Mine.

We’ve also worked on brand new projects such as the Ultra Eco ‘underground’ office complex at Trevissome Park and Dar Gwenen, a new home in Downderry which received the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) award for best individual new home in the South West. And just to show that flat roofing techniques also work on more sloping roofs we re-roofed Constantine’s WI Hall.

We were therefore really pleased when we were invited to bring our flat roof and waterproofing skills to a new home set on a woodland site in Cornwall. Designed by KASTARCHITECTS the property looked to make the most of the site and views with the living accommodation on an upper floor set at a ninety degree rotation from the ground floor bedroom area.

KASTARCHITECTS based in Truro aim to provide design solutions which are “are elegant, simple, cost-effective and innovative; underpinned by thorough research and an eye for detail.” In this case their design was brought to life by Davey Construction, a company which strongly believes that “exceeding our client’s expectations every step of the way is paramount to our continued success.”

For our part the design called for a Danosa HSF fully adhered single ply system over 140mm insulation over the main roof and balcony areas. Not only does this waterproofing system have high dimensional stability and excellent resistance to tearing, it is suitable for both flat roofs and walkways or balconies. It also has very good resistance to micro-organisms, weathering and UV radiation; all key requirements for a flat roof in Cornwall, particularly one set in a wooded area.

It was a privilege to play our part in such an outstanding project which has earned KASTARCHITECTS a shortlist nomination in the category of ‘Best Architect or Designer for a Self Build Project’ at the Build It Awards 2019. Not only that, the house has been featured on the front cover of the November 2019 Grand Designs magazine.
