Contemporary building with flat roofs and balconies

When it comes to creating award winning buildings, teamwork allied to an eye for detail is key to success. That was certainly the case with Dar Gwenen, a new home in Downderry which has just received the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) award for best individual new home in the South West.

Harrison Sutton Architects, based in Totnes, specialise in designing ‘contemporary and traditional buildings within historic and sensitive landscape and costal locations.’ Their work has resulted in numerous awards, so when they teamed up with fellow award winners PCA Consulting Engineers and Doyle & Whitley Construction to design and build Dar Gwenen this project was always going to be special.

Pellow Roofing were therefore delighted to have been invited to contribute to this award winning new build home. The design called for the installation of appropriate waterproofing to the main roofs and balconies with a sedum flat roof covering on the two upper roof levels. In order to meet the specification Pellow installed a cold applied vapour control layer followed by a bespoke tapered insulation scheme. The top layer was waterproofed in Resitrix SK W Full Bond before the sedum roof coverings were installed.

The Resitrix SK W product is not only a fully self-adhesive waterproofing product, its root resistant properties make it a good choice when it comes to over-layering with Sedum. The underside has a self-adhesive, polymer-modified layer of bitumen that is protected by a detachable release film. Installation is simple and safe without any need for naked flames and, according to the Resitrix website, it delivers a 100% leak-tight welded seam.  With a certified service life of more than fifty years, the product is sustainable, being EPD-certified and DGNB compliant.

We are proud of our small contribution to this award winning home which will now represent the South West in the national judging later in 2019. More importantly, the home owners are pleased with the overall result, commenting on the Doyle & Whitley website that “Attention to detail and artistic flair (interiors and exteriors) has succeeded in making our new home the stunning building it is. Dar Gwenen is unique and has been admired by many.
