Awarding vision

House surrounded by trees with flat waterproofed roof

“The backbone of success is hard work, determination, good planning, and perseverance.” That quote comes from ex-American soccer icon Mia Hamm but you can equally find similar thoughts being expressed in multiple disciplines across the globe. Delivering something special, whether in sport or any other field, requires a step up out of the ordinary.

When we were invited to play our part in creating one particular property in Plymouth that step up out of the ordinary was obvious to us. Overlooking Plymouth Sound and largely built using Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs), Stonehouse is a unique and iconic property which justifiably was nominated as a regional finalist in the 2020 LABC Building Excellence awards.

Nudura ICFs offer steel-reinforced concrete cores which range from four to twelve inches, proving a versatile, strong and well insulated alternative to some other building materials. Proving that any great achievement usually rests on collaboration, Nudura expert Nick Fell from The Fell Partnership worked with overall project principal contractors Doyle & Whitley to develop a method of creating the tight curves which the project design called for. That led Tom from Doyle and Whitley to comment: “We had never built with Nudura ICF before, but it was a real pleasure to work with. The product could really meet the challenges and the design for this project.”

Our role at Pellow was to deliver a waterproofed roof structure across the building including a small green roofing area above the curved entrance way. The chosen product was Danopol HSF from Danosa. Primarily designed for flat roof waterproofing, Danopol is a synthetic PVC plasticized membrane, reinforced with polyester net carrier and a 300gr geotextile fleece backing.

Not only does this product offer a high resistance to piercing or tearing, it also adapts well to any type of geometry. This was particularly important given the mix of geometric shapes and curves present across the roof space. Danopol HSF also has good UV resistance, an important consideration for buildings which are close to water and therefore may receive increased UV exposure.

We were extremely pleased to have been invited by Doyle and Whitley to play our part in creating this award winning home which is as visually exciting inside as out.
