Waterproofing wind turbines

We may have said it before, but we are happy to say it again; living and working in the South West, and particularly in Cornwall, is a great joy and a privilege. Whether we are working in Truro in the heart of the county or in a more rural area, our customers give us some fantastic projects to become involved in.

In view of the response that we got to our last article on creating a waterproof coating for wind turbine base at Launceston, we thought we’d share another wind turbine project with you. For this one, we had to travel over the border into Devon, to Buckland Brewer which is close to Devon’s north coast and not far from Bideford. Here again, we had the chance to work on an interesting project, surrounded by some fantastic countryside.

As with the Launceston wind turbine project, the selected waterproofing product was Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid applied waterproofing from Kemper System. But for this project, the lead team of SEL Clarke Contractors Ltd and Stafford Wind Ltd gave us an extra challenge; wrapping Kemper around the first pour of concrete. As you can see from the pictures we had to work within the confines of a scaffold matrix but the nature of Kemper System meant that we were able to satisfactorily complete the project.

It’s no surprise that Kemperol 2K-PUR was the chosen product for this particular project. A fleece reinforced liquid waterproofing system, Kemperol 2K-PUR forms ‘a permanently elastic, seamless, yet highly vapour permeable membrane that is both durable and tear resistant.’ The product is also root resistant, a prime consideration when working on projects such as wind turbines which sit in the middle of fields. Environmental considerations are also important and as 80% of the resins contained within Kemperol 2K-PUR come from the seeds of the tropical castor plant, this waterproofing product comes with strong environmental credentials.

Pellow Flat Roofing are approved by Kemper System to install Kemperol 2K-PUR, having undertaken appropriate product training. The product isn’t only suitable for wind turbines, its flexibility and durability make it perfect for a variety of waterproofing needs including living roofs. As an added bonus, Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent free and odourless which makes it ideal for indoor projects such as schools, hospitals and food manufacturing plants.
