Waterproofing Cooperatively

Single ply roofing co-op

One of the most interesting aspects of our work as Cornwall flat roofing and waterproofing contractors is the sheer variety of projects which we are asked to work on.  Sometimes these are flagged up well in advance but at other times an urgent project comes up which needs us to pull out all the stops if we are to complete on time.

Such was the case when we were asked to help out with dry-roofing the new Co-op building in Clipper Way, Falmouth.  With a sales area of around 2,300 sq ft, the project to convert the old Clipper Way pub into a supermarket was designed not only to bring the Co-op experience to the local area but also to become a hub for the community.

The initial build project did not include a replacement flat roof but a subsequent inspection highlighted problems due to water pooling on the roof so a decision was made to replace the roof before the store opened.  With new machinery and equipment already installed in the main building, our task was not only to replace the roof in a short space of time but also to maintain a dry building in the process.

The project required us to strip existing waterproof coverings and remove them from the site before creating the new covering.  For this we supplied and fitted new timber decking, creating a fall on the different roofing sections to enable water run-off.  Then we created a waterproof coating using Cefil RP 1.2mm mechanically fixed single ply.

Cefil was chosen for the job as it not only provides a waterproof covering; it also has good UV and fire resistance.  The latter is particularly important in a building which is going to be used by numbers of people on an ongoing basis.  In fact Cefil membranes are not only fire resistant, they are also self-extinguishing, and have passed some of the most stringent European regulations including BS476: part 3.  This makes Cefil products unrestricted under current building regulations.

In keeping with Co-op traditions, Cefil membranes have proven sustainability and are produced in line with ISO14001 environmental management standards.    The products are designed to “represent a minimum burden on the environment, from conception to completion.”

With just two weeks to complete the project our team worked across weekends to ensure that the project was finished on time.  The completed Co-op store was opened at the end of March 2015 with the help of pupils from two local primary schools.
