Growing Cornwall’s Schools

The Bishops’ C.E.V.A. primary school may be the smallest in Newquay but it has a huge heart.  With a vision to sow the seeds of life-long learning, the school seems to pack a lot into the day and its Ofsted status of Good (with Outstanding Behaviour and Safety) is testament to the hard work of the school team.

Following a review the school decided that expansion was required and as part of this, there was a need to build an extension to improve reception and office space.  Thanks to a grant from the Diocese of Truro, work on the extension started in February 2014.  As Cornish flat roof specialists, Pellow Flat Roofing were very pleased to be asked by the main contractor, Brannan & Son to help with the roofing on the project.

Every project is important but when it comes to one that helps with the long term future of our county, such as a school or community building, we feel extra privileged to take part.  As has been amply demonstrated over the last year, buildings in Newquay not only have to cope with summer sun but also have to withstand winder storms bringing copious amounts of rain and high winds.  For this reason the product chosen for The Bishops’ C.E.V.A school had to withstand extremes of weather as well as being functional and cost effective.

Cefil RVF fully adhered single ply with standing seam effect not only meets the criteria, its strength and durability also enables us to provide a 20 year warranty.  Cefil’s vision is to “provide a market leading waterproofing solution, whilst enhancing sustainability and corporate social responsibility.”  The benefits of the Cefil RVF system include low maintenance, excellent whole life cost and economy of scale, and excellent wind uplift resistance capability.  Cefil RVF is also resistant to low and high temperatures and is quick to install.  The standing seam profile finish also enhances the look of a building, helping the pupils to be proud of their centre of learning.

This initial extension is only the first step in a programme which , according to the school newsletter, will see “government-funded building work to provide three more classrooms, extensions to two existing classrooms, additional toilets and another hall due to start in October 2014.”  In the meantime we have been proud to play our small part in the expansion of the school and wish its staff and pupils all the best as they move along their new journey.
