Waterproofing the Malpas valleys

When two waterways merge there you find myth and legend. Perhaps not always, but certainly there is something almost magical about Malpas where the rivers Truro and Tresillian converge. Said to be the place where Iseult made crossing to King Mark’s palace, this beautifully tranquil village may sit in the heart of Cornwall but it has navigable waterways right down to the sea at Falmouth.

Close enough to Truro to benefit from city amenities but far enough away to feel remote and self-sufficient; according to the village hall website Malpas “remains a tiny but lively community.” We were therefore very fortunate to be invited to undertake some work at Victoria Quay waterside apartments in Malpas.

Built in the late 1980s, the gutters and valleys at Victoria Quay had given problems for some time with previous attempts failing to stem ongoing water leak problems. With 350m² of valleys and gutters in total the task would have been a substantial one had the existing mastic asphalt needed to be replaced. Following an inspection we recommended that Kemperol V210 would be the optimum solution.

Kemperol V210 is a ‘3-component, polyester-based system that forms a permanently elastic, seamless, yet highly vapour permeable membrane’. Kemperol V210 is applied directly on top of existing structures which means that disruption and costs are minimised. Another benefit of the Kemperol system, particularly when residential accommodation is concerned, is that it is applied cold, meaning that there is no fire risk. Weather resistant within thirty minutes, it has excellent elasticity and tensile strength and is UV stable, of particular importance in our Cornish summers.

Pellow Flat Roofing Ltd are approved Kemper contractors, having been trained in their waterproofing and surfacing products. Kemperol products bond directly to virtually any substrate, bringing waterproofing solutions to a range of building challenges including green roofs, flat roofs & balconies, heritage properties and wet rooms. For projects where solvent based products would prove problematical, Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless.

Kemper products are manufactured with attention to sustainability and come with BREEAM certification. Kemperol 2-PUR also carries LEED certification. With Kemper products applied over existing substrates there is a reduction in landfill and the Kemper System is constantly under review, with the company focusing on replacing oil-based materials with renewable ones.

In the case of Victoria Quay apartments, Kemperol was the ideal solution as there would be no disruption to existing asphalt liners and the entire project from cleaning to priming and lining only took two weeks. Due to the choice of product the project came with a twenty year warranty.
