Ship Shape at Mylor Harbour

For many Cornish visitors the combination of Falmouth and Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle sits high on the “must see” list. Boasting the accolade of being the third largest deep water harbour in the world, Falmouth plays host to visitors from land and sea with cruise ships calling regularly during the summer months.

Whilst many visitors confine themselves to exploring the streets and harbour of Falmouth or making the climb up to the Castle, some will venture further afield and discover the delights of the surrounding countryside and waterways. Some of those lucky few will stumble upon Mylor Harbour, a mecca for water lovers.

Once known as the site of the most westerly Naval Dockyard in England, Mylor has recently re-invented itself with the building of a new yacht club and marina with space for 400 boats. Home to the British Paralympic sailing team prior to the 2012 Olympics, Mylor Harbour still retains its sense of beauty and tranquillity. We were therefore very pleased to be asked recently to install two Cefil single ply roofs on a property in Mylor Harbour.

Cefil was chosen for this project as in addition to its waterproofing properties it is also fire resistant and has a high resistance to UV degradation. This last feature can be a particularly important consideration in buildings which are in direct sunlight or potentially affected by UV rays being reflected off water. The Cefil website comments that “Cefil materials are installed worldwide in a variety of climatic extremes and show superior performance and durability – a crucial element of environmental sustainability.”

On this particular project we installed a Cefil RP 1.2mm mechanically fixed membrane which met the client’s requirements in terms of waterproofing protection and performance. Cefil is quick to assemble and install and this helps to keep the building costs down. Cefil also scores highly both from a thermal performance and environmental perspective and its durability enabled us to provide a 15 year guarantee.

Working in Mylor Harbour reinforced our belief that we are extremely lucky to be able to ply our trade in this very special corner of the UK. Creating a lasting waterproof cover for a client whilst our ears are filled with the sounds of the sea and yachts at anchor is truly a privilege.
