Setting the standard at Portreath

Buildings with built up felt flat roofing

When you are asked to undertake some work in an award winning holiday park then you know that nothing but the best will do. In 2012 the Gwel an Mor resort in Portreath which offers 5 star luxury self-catering accommodation was awarded a gold medal at the National Tourism Awards for Best Holiday Park in the Country. The Gwel an Mor website highlights it’s desire to provide “luxury self catering where you enjoy the kind of personal service, comfort and style usually only associated with a top hotel” so when the resort decided to increase the accommodation on offer it called on the proven expertise of Cornish company Building with Frames.

With the built environment very much in mind the team at Building with Frames are driven by creating energy efficient, comfortable, inspiring structures and spaces. From pre-fabricated garden boxes to individually designed timber homes, Building with Frames create thermally efficient buildings which are as aesthetically pleasing as they are environmentally friendly. As the main contractors for the accommodation project, Building with Homes called on Pellow Flat Roofing to provide the flat roofing element of the build for seven units on the site.

With quality very much in mind, we recommended three layers of built up felt roofing, both to provide the weatherproofing required and also to add to the thermal efficiency of the units. Using products sourced from Nord Bitumi UK we completed the roofing work during the summer of 2014. We chose the Nord Bitumi materials for their longevity and for their excellent waterproofing pedigree but it was also an added bonus that Nord Bitumi look as much to the environment as they do to provide sustainable waterproofing solutions. As their website says, “people and the environment constantly inspire all of our innovations.”

Built up felt roofing is an ideal solution for Cornish flat roofs. Both flexible and durable, built up felt roofing is one of the most commonly used forms of flat roofing for both domestic and commercial properties. Felts vary in weight and thickness which means that the most appropriate mix can be chosen for each project and once installed felt roofing can be topped off with a variety of products including solar-reflective paint, tiles or chippings. Advances in both materials and bonding techniques have made felt roofing far more durable than in days gone by and as a flat roofing solution, this product ticks the environment and building regulation boxes.

As you can see from the picture, the Gwel an Mor flat roofing project gave us another chance to appreciate the glorious Cornish countryside as well as helping to play our part in Cornwall’s award winning holiday sector.
