Safe from wind and weather

Waterproofed wind turbine base using Kemperol

When we talk about waterproofing a range of surfaces it’s generally flat roofs that first come to mind, perhaps followed by balconies and terraces. And it’s true that a lot of our work relates to these areas; but waterproofing techniques equally apply to a vast range of surfaces from swimming pool liners to tanking basements and from indoor car parks to stairways.

In fact, our skills can be applied anywhere that a long-lasting waterproof coating is required. One of our recent projects is a perfect example of this. g2 Energy specialise in the design and construction of renewable energy projects including solar, anaerobic digestion and wind farms. They’ve been ranked by the Sunday Times Virgin league table as one of the top 10 fastest-growing companies in the UK two years in a row and according to their website have to date connected in excess of 891MW of renewable energy to the grid with a further 582MW due to be collected by mid-2016.

For one of their recent projects g2 Energy called on Pellow to create a waterproof coating for a wind turbine base at Launceston. The approved partner for such projects is Kemper System, in particular Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid applied waterproofing. When looking to provide green energy it is appropriate to use green materials wherever possible and Kemperol 2K-PUR certainly qualifies in this respect with about 80% of the resins contained in the product being obtained from a renewable resource, namely the seeds of the tropical castor plant.

More importantly, this fleece reinforced liquid waterproofing system forms ‘a permanently elastic, seamless, yet highly vapour permeable membrane that is both durable and tear resistant.’ These are all qualities which are particularly appropriate given the outdoor nature of the site and the likely effects of the Cornish weather. Another benefit of Kemperol 2K-PUR is that it is root resistant, in flat roofing terms making it a good solution for living roofs, and therefore also ideal for a project such as a wind turbine base. Pellow Flat Roofing are approved by Kemper System to install Kemperol 2K-PUR, having undertaken appropriate product training.

This project has been a perfect example of the way in which liquid waterproofing has an application across a wide range of projects. It’s not just for roofs although it is a good flat roofing medium, it’s not just for balconies or terraces although here to it can help people to enjoy the beauty of the Cornish countryside whilst remaining dry indoors. In fact, liquid waterproofing can be a versatile and flexible solution for even complex structures.
