Lining up a new roof at Rock

fibreglass flat roof finished with graphite grey resin topcoat

One glance at the beautiful village of Rock and it is easy to see why it has been referred to as “Britain’s Saint-Tropez.’ Sweeping sandy beaches and an abundance of water sports make this village in the Camel Estuary one to savour. Excellent surfing nearby and a reputation for great food, not to mention the mild climate and stunning views add up to a sought-after holiday destination which has attracted royalty and stars alike over the years.

We were therefore very pleased to be invited by T&D Carter Ltd to undertake work on a flat roof on a building at Rock. The roof which measured 100m2 was waterproofed with fibreglass and was assembled in six parts. Fibreglass was an excellent choice for this particular roof as it is lightweight and strong. It is also very weather and heat resistant which makes it ideal for our Cornish summers and when finished with a graphite grey resin topcoat it is easy to clean and hard wearing.

For this project we started by priming block and beam slab with a bitumen primer which helps to seal and waterproof the basic structure. Then we torched on a heat activated vapour control layer before adding Ecotherm insulation which provides a high rate of return when looking to achieve part-L compliance.

18mm osb3 tongue and groove sterling boards were added, followed by fibreglass laminate formed with a 600g chop strand matt and topped off with a graphite grey resin topcoat. The result is a strong and well insulated roof which should stand the test of time.

Once again we have been privileged to carry out work on an outstandingly beautiful property in one of Cornwall’s most sought-after hot spots. With Porthilly Cove just a few minutes’ walk away and the sight of boats in the Estuary to welcome us as we arrived each day we certainly appreciated the invitation from T&D Carter Ltd to play our small part in “Britain’s Saint-Tropez”.
