Banking on a dry roof

scaffolding set up to work on roof parapet

If you’ve been reading out most recent blogs you’ll know that at Pellow Flat Roofing Ltd we really appreciate the chance to work in some of the most beautiful corners of Cornwall. But our county is not just beaches and scenery; it also boasts the most southerly city in mainland Britain.

According to the City Council website “Truro is an historic Market Town full of richness and diversity” as well as being the “centre for administration, commerce and tourism for the County of Cornwall.” Its unique position at the heart of Cornwall makes it a key inland tourist destination with plenty of events to satisfy locals and tourists alike. For example at the time of writing Truro Trend is underway, bringing fashion “must haves” to the streets of Cornwall.

Truro’s cathedral may be comparatively new in terms of UK cathedrals, but it has stood now for over 100 years and graces the town with its multiple spires crafted in granite, polyphant and Bath stone. Unfortunately the Bath stone has succumbed somewhat to the ravages of sea spray and sand hence the ongoing restoration programme.

Further down in the city another building had suffered in the Cornish climate and we were therefore called in to carry out some much needed restoration to the parapet of the HSBC building. On investigation the parapet wall made of concrete with a lead capping had failed. Our restoration project started by capping the parapet with ply wood which gave us a clean working surface. This was then weatherproofed in dark grey Cefil RVF 1.5mm. This material is comparatively quick to install and has good resistance to UV radiation, weathering and chemical oxidation, making it perfect for the Cornish climate. Our choice of material not only provided a weatherproof solution it also enabled us to provide a 20 year guarantee.

Although scaffolding was required whilst the work was in progress the HSBC bank remained unaffected and was able to continue business as usual. As we worked up on the roof we were privileged to get a unique view of Truro Cathedral from an angle not seen by most tourists.
