A room with a view

The popular image of Cornwall is one of beaches and surfing but those who know it better understand that Cornwall has so much more to offer.  Take any slice of our great county and the chances are that there will be something to catch the eye.

For example, a few steps outside Bodmin lies Cardinham Wood, offering over 250 hectares of mixed woodland which according to Visit Cornwall is ideal for cycling, walking and horse riding. The wood is also a refuge for wildlife including deer whilst otters and kingfishers can be spotted in the nearby river.

It was with pleasure therefore that we were asked to undertake a balcony refurbishment in the Cardinham area.  A legacy covering of tiled mastic asphalt topped with astro-turf had passed its useful lifetime and the resultant leaks were causing collateral damage. Not unsurprisingly our client was looking for a permanent solution and after investigating a range of options was drawn to the Westwood liquid waterproofing system.

For this project we specified the Wecryl High build system. Not only does this have a high bonding strength on almost any substrate, it is a cost-efficient and high-quality solution for balconies and for other areas which may be subject to high levels of footfall. The liquid solution makes for a swift installation and in this instance the entire project was completed in two days. As an added bonus the surface design is available in a range of colours, patterns and markings. For example, in this project for the floor area we used Wecryl 288 in Terracotta with Weplus chips to add a decorative non slip finish.

Apart from its waterproofing properties, the Wecryl system has good weather resistant properties, responding well to both high and low temperatures and UV rays. This together with its hard wearing characteristics makes it perfect for a Cornish balcony which in high summer may well be used as an integral part of the home, a room with a view.

Not only is the Wecryl High build system ideal for Cornwall balcony refurbishments, its hard wearing properties also make it perfect for areas of high footfall such as walkways. With unlimited design options the system is also suitable for car parks, with the space markings being incorporated into the surface.
